Within 4 monthsTake out basic insurance
Is it really mandatory?
Yes. Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands must have Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering). If you do not arrange it in time you can be fined, and you have to pay your healthcare costs yourself.
When do you need to arrange it?
If you will work in the Netherlands for an extended period, take out basic insurance within four months. You need to be registered in the BRP (through your municipality). The official guidance says you are insured from the day you start working, so do not wait.
What does basic insurance cover?
Most healthcare in the basic package: visits to your GP, hospital care, pharmacy costs and maternity care. Extras such as dental care or physiotherapy are usually separate, optional insurance.
The deductible (eigen risico)
In 2026 the mandatory deductible is €385 per year. It only applies when you use care that is covered, for example hospital treatment. Visits to the GP do not use up your deductible. Children under 18 do not pay a deductible.
Healthcare allowance
If your income is low you may receive the healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) from the tax office, which helps pay for your insurance. You apply for it yourself, and you need your BSN and DigiD.
A tip
Choose an insurer and a plan that fit your situation, not just the cheapest. Ask whether the policy covers care in your own language and what the deductible looks like. If you are unsure, ask us or a Work in NL information point.
